IRGC welcomes the release of Jovan Divjak, the retired general of the Bosnian Army

The Institute for Research of Genocide Canada welcomes the release of General Jovan Divjak from detainment in Austria. This comes after Serbia requested extradition of a former Bosnian Army General Jovan Divjak for war crimes. On July 29th, Austrian court declined Serbia’s extradition request on the basis that there was not enough evidence against the General.

Just like Ejup Ganic and Ilija Jurisic, General Divjak is a victim of Serbia’s politically motivated plan to prove that Bosnia and Herzegovina played an equal role in war crimes during the 1992 to 1995 aggression. Once again, the case against Jovan Divjak proved to be another Serbian nationalist campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens.

We are saddened to see individuals such as Divjak, who tirelessly defended Bosnia and Herzegovina and its people from Serbia’s genocidal campaign during the aggression, become victims of Serbia’s politically motivated revenge on Bosnia and Herzegovina. Instead of taking responsibility for the war crimes and genocide, Serbia continues to create campaigns in an attempt to transfer all the blame on Bosnia and Herzegovina.

That being said we hope that Mr. Divjak is the last victim of Serbian nationalist propaganda and we call on Bosnia and Herzegovina to protect its citizens from such absurd accusations. Furthermore Institute for Research of Genocide Canada urges the international community to hold Serbia accountable for its continuous attempt to destabilize the peace and reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
